Hi! I’m Jeni, the voice behind Biscuits and Booze.
Welcome to the blog!
I love to talk and write about food ALMOST as much as I love to eat it and prepare it. My food philosophy is everything in moderation – except perhaps pizza, which I am sort of obsessed with (cheese and bread!). I’ve been a pescetarian for almost ten years now, though, which means I eat fish and seafood but no beef, chicken, pork, or game.
My childhood was southern, with all the biscuits and gravy and cheesy grits a little girl’s heart could desire, and my adulthood has been both international and New Orleans based, and on my blog you’ll find food inspired by all of the above.
I think imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, which is my excuse for trying ALL THE RESTAURANTS. Great chefs at great restaurants regularly inspire me, and I will frequently write about great eateries in my two hometowns of Knoxville, TN and New Orleans, LA, as well as exciting places I discover on my travels.
If I were to sum up my “food style” in one sentence I would say that I am interested in classic dishes, comfort food, and vegetarian/healthful cuisine that someone can reasonably prepare well in a home kitchen.
Fun Facts:
I love spice, dry white wine, and creative cocktails.
Happy hour is the BEST hour or three of the day. (this one bears repeating 🙂
I am NOT to be trusted around donuts. NO WILLPOWER. Which is why I’m also a part time fitness teacher – I teach spin, yoga, mat Pilates, not-your-grandma’s-water-aerobics, and sculpt classes. Or at least I do when I’m not pregnant!
I travel a great deal, and my husband is from London, so we spend as much time in the UK as possible, which is never enough (damn that currency exchange!). I read all the time, and I read widely. My husband and I both write fiction, and eventually will publish books of our own, she says, with hopeful determination.
We also run a small literary enterprise called Burlesque Press. We not only publish a few books a year, but we host a creative writing and literary festival in New Orleans over New Years. The festival culminates in a masquerade ball. What better way to spend New Year’s than eating, drinking, reading, writing, and masquerade-balling in New Orleans, right?
We are here in Knoxville because my husband is working on a PhD. We have two dogs and two cats, and our first child was born this past August. Hello gorgeous baby! Good bye free time! But you know what? I don’t even mind. His smiles make me MELT.
How Can I help You Here at Biscuits and Booze?
Here at Biscuits and Booze I like to talk about recipes of all kinds. I love to cook and bake, but I am most definitely a home cook. Everything I make can reasonably be prepared in your kitchen, right at home. Click here to explore!
I am also on a quest to blog for profit. Don’t know what that is, or how on earth one can make money blogging? Click here my friend, and we’ll figure it out together!
And finally, I want to talk about this new motherhood season of my life. There’s so much uncertainty around motherhood – am I making sure my baby gets enough sleep? Enough food? Enough play time? But there is oh so much joy as well. I really want to connect with other Moms who are also doing their best to figure this thing out!
